How it Works
Utilization answers an efficiency question: what share of available time is productive work.
- Computes utilization rate = productive hours / total available hours x 100.
- Separates billable, delivery support, and overhead time to show where utilization is lost.
- Use with Team Capacity Calculator when planning workload and with Sprint Velocity Calculator when comparing efficiency against throughput.
Field Definitions
- Team size: Number of people whose time is included in the utilization calculation period.
- Hours per week: Planned weekly working hours per person before applying productivity or billability splits.
- Period weeks: Length of the measurement window in weeks (for example, one sprint or one month).
- Productive hours: Hours spent on delivery work counted as productive output during the selected period.
- Billable hours: Subset of productive hours that can be invoiced or directly attributed to client value.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
+What is a good utilization range?
It depends on role and operating model, but sustainable planning usually avoids treating 100% utilization as normal.
+Is utilization the same as capacity?
No. Capacity is available time; utilization is the percentage of that time used productively.
+Can high utilization still be risky?
Yes. Very high sustained utilization can increase delivery risk, reduce quality, and raise burnout pressure.
